Chiropractic
Chiropractic is a complementary and alternative health
care profession which focuses on diagnosing, treating, and
preventing mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, their
effects on the nervous system, and on general health. Chiropractic's
premise is that spinal joint misalignments, which chiropractors call
vertebral subluxations, can interfere with the nervous system and
result in many different conditions of diminished health. Their
treatments consist of a variety of techniques and methods which
chiropractors refer to as spinal adjustments. In contrast, the term
subluxation, as used in conventional medicine, is usually associated
with specific conditions which are a direct consequence of injury to
joints or associated nerves.
History
Chiropractic was founded in
1895 by Daniel David Palmer, based on his assertion that all health
problems could be prevented or treated using adjustments of the
spine (spinal adjustments), and sometimes other joints, to correct
what he termed vertebral subluxations. He, and later his son B.J.
Palmer, proposed that subluxations were misaligned vertebrae which
caused nerve compression that interfered with the transmission of
what he named Innate Intelligence. This interference interrupted the
proper flow of Innate Intelligence from "above, down, inside, and
out" to the organ to which it traveled. As a result, the human body
would experience "dis-ease" or disharmony which would result in loss
of health. He compared this process to stepping on a hose that
slowed the flow of water to a garden: if you take your foot off the
hose, the flow returns to normal and the garden will flourish.
Explanation
Manipulation
of the spine is the main technique in today's chiropractic
adjustment, or treatment. Though its use has been documented from
the time of the ancient Egyptians, spinal manipulation in an attempt
to correct the theoretical vertebral subluxation is solely a
chiropractic endeavor. Chiropractic's contribution to the field of
manipulative therapies is the concept of applying a precise
adjustment to a specific affected vertebra, as opposed to the
generalized maneuvers of the early osteopaths. While some
chiropractors adhere strictly to the use of only spinal manipulation
in their adjustment, others include a broad range of methods
directed at correcting the subluxation and/or just relieving musculoskeletal pain.
Some
chiropractors specialize in treating specific musculoskeletal
problems or sports injuries, or they may combine chiropractic with
manipulation of the extremities, physiotherapy,
nutrition, or exercises to increase spinal strength or improve
overall health. Some also use other
complementary and alternative methods as a part of a holistic
treatment approach. However, chiropractors do not prescribe drugs;
they believe this to be the province of conventional medicine, and
that their role is to pursue drug-free alternative
treatments.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture (from Lat. acus, "needle" (noun), and
pungere, "prick" (verb)) or in Standard Mandarin, zhen jiu (?? lit:
needle - moxibustion) is a technique of inserting and manipulating
needles into "acupuncture points" on the body. According to
acupunctural teachings this will restore health and well-being, and
is particularly good at treating pain. The definition and
characterization of these points is standardized by the World Health
Organization. Acupuncture is thought to have originated in China and
is most commonly associated with Traditional
Chinese medicine (TCM).
Traditional
theory
Traditional
acupuncture involves the use of high-quality stainless steel,
silver, or copper needles
Chinese
medicine is based on a different paradigm than scientific
biomedicine. Its theory holds the following explanation of
acupuncture:
Acupuncture
treats the human body as a whole that involves several "systems of
function" that are in some cases loosely associated with (but not
identified on a one-to-one basis with) physical organs. Some systems
of function, such as the "triple heater" (San Jiao, also called the
"triple burner") have no corresponding physical organ. Disease is
understood as a loss of homeostasis among the several systems of
function, and treatment of disease is attempted by modifying the
activity of one or more systems of function through the activity of
needles, pressure, heat, etc. on sensitive parts of the body of
small volume traditionally called "acupuncture points" in English,
or "xue" (?, cavities) in Chinese. This is referred to as treating
"patterns of disharmony".
Treatment
of acupuncture points may be performed along the twelve main or
eight extra meridians, located throughout the body, or on tender
points, called "ashi" (signifying "that's it", "ouch", or "oh yes").
The
acupuncturist decides which points to treat by observing and
questioning the patient in order to make a diagnosis according to
the tradition which he or she utilizes. In TCM, there are four
diagnostic methods: inspection, auscultation and olfaction,
inquiring, and palpation (Cheng, 1987, ch. 12).
TCM perspective on
treatment of disease
Although
TCM is based on the treatment of "patterns of disharmony" rather
than biomedical diagnoses, practitioners familiar with both systems
have commented on relationships between the two. A given TCM pattern
of disharmony may be reflected in a certain range of biomedical
diagnoses: thus, the pattern called Deficiency of Spleen Qi could
manifest as chronic fatigue, diarrhea or uterine prolapse. Likewise,
a population of patients with a given biomedical diagnosis may have
varying TCM patterns. These observations are encapsulated in the TCM
aphorism "One disease, many patterns; one pattern, many diseases".
(Kaptchuk, 1982)
Acupuncture
has been used to treat a number of conditions. Classically, "in
clinical practice, acupuncture treatment is typically
highly-individualized and based on philosophical constructs, and
subjective and intuitive impressions" and not on controlled
scientific research."
History
In
China, the practice of acupuncture can perhaps be traced as far back
as the 1st millennium BC, and archeological evidence has been
identified with the period of the Han dynasty (from 202 BC to 220
AD).
Recent
examinations of Ötzi, a 5000-year-old
mummy found in the Alps, have identified over fifty tattoos on his
body, some of which are located on acupuncture points that would
today be used to treat ailments Ötzi suffered from. Some scientists
believe that this is evidence that practices similar to acupuncture
were practiced elsewhere in Eurasia during the early bronze age.
According to an article published in The Lancet by Dorfer et al.:
"We hypothesized that there might have been a medical system similar
to acupuncture (Chinese Zhenjiu: needling and burning) that was
practiced in Central Europe 5200 years ago...A treatment modality
similar to acupuncture thus appears to have been in use long before
its previously known period of use in the medical tradition of
ancient China. This raises the possibility of acupuncture having
originated in the Eurasian continent at least 2000 years earlier
than previously recognized."
Acupuncture's
origins in China are uncertain. The earliest Chinese medical texts
(Ma-wang-tui graves 68 BC) do not mention acupuncture. The Chinese
medical text that first describes acupuncture is The Yellow
Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine (History of Acupuncture),
which was compiled around 305-204 B.C. Some hieroglyphics have been
found dating back to 1000 B.C. that may indicate an early use of
acupuncture. Bian stones, sharp pointed stones used to treat
diseases in ancient times, have also been discovered in ruins
(History of Acupuncture in China); some scholars believe that the
bloodletting for which these stones were likely used presages
certain acupuncture techniques.
An example of
acupuncture treatment
In
western medicine, vascular headaches (the kind that are accompanied
by throbbing veins in the temples) are typically treated with
analgesics such as aspirin and/or by the use of agents such as
niacin that dilate the affected blood vessels in the scalp, but in
acupuncture a common treatment for such headaches is to stimulate
the sensitive points that are located roughly in the center of the
webs between the thumbs and the palms of the patient, the hé gu
points. These points are described by acupuncture theory as
"targeting the face and head" and are considered to be the most
important point when treating disorders affecting the face and head.
The patient reclines, and the points on each hand are first
sterilized with alcohol, and then thin, disposable needles are
inserted to a depth of approximately 3-5 mm until a characteristic
"twinge" is felt by the patient, often accompanied by a slight
twitching of the area between the thumb and hand. Most patients
report a pleasurable "tingling" sensation and feeling of relaxation
while the needles are in place. The needles are retained for 15-20
minutes while the patient rests, and then are removed.
In the
clinical practice of acupuncturists, patients frequently report one
or more of certain kinds of sensation that are associated with this
treatment, sensations that are stronger than those that would be
felt by a patient not suffering from a vascular headache:
- Extreme sensitivity to pain at the points in the webs of the
thumbs.
- In bad headaches, a feeling of nausea that persists for
roughly the same period as the stimulation being administered to
the webs of the thumbs.
- Simultaneous relief of the headache. (See Zhen Jiu Xue, p.
177f et passim.)

Craniosacral
Therapy
Craniosacral therapy is
a subtle and profound healing form which assists the body's natural
capacity for self-repair.
In a
typical craniosacral session, you will usually lie (or sometimes
sit) fully-clothed on a treatment couch. The therapist will make
contact by placing their hands lightly on your body and tuning in to
what is happening by 'listening' with their hands. Contact is made
carefully so that you will feel at ease with what is happening.
The
first thing you will probably notice is a sense of deep relaxation,
which will generally last throughout the session. With subsequent
treatments this release of tension often extends into everyday life.
The work can address physical aches and pains, acute and chronic
disease, emotional or psychological disturbances, or simply help to
develop well-being, health and vitality.
Craniosacral therapy is so
gentle that it is suitable for babies, children, and the elderly, as
well as adults and people in fragile or acutely painful conditions.
Treatment can aid almost any condition, raising vitality and
improving the body's capacity for self-repair.
Some of the conditions successfully worked with are:
- Arthritis
- Asthma
- Autism
- Back pain
- Birth trauma
- Bronchitis
- Cerebral Palsy
- Colic
- Depression
- Digestive problems
- Drug withdrawal
- Dyslexia
- Exhaustion
- Fall or injury
- Frozen shoulder
- Hormonal imbalances
- Hyperactivity
- Immune system disorders
- Insomnia
- Lethargy
- Menstrual pain, PMS
- Migraine
- Post-operative conditions
- Problems during and after pregnancy
- Re-integration after accidents
- Sciatica
- Sinusitis
- Spinal curvatures
- Sports injuries
- Stress related illnesses
- Tinnitus and middle ear problems
- TMJ (jaw) disorders
- Visual disturbances
- Whiplash injuries
Sometimes the benefits are not immediately
noticeable but become obvious on returning to a familiar
environment. The work can involve resolution of past events and is
often profoundly relaxing, deeply moving and exhilarating.
Craniosacral therapy developed from the work of an
American osteopath, Dr William Sutherland in the early 1900s. He
discovered intrinsic movements of the bones in the head and his
further research revealed different rhythms in the body. As a result
of detailed clinical observation it has become clear that these
movements, which can be measured with delicate scientific
instruments, are a direct expression of health and offer a way of
working with the physical as well as the more subtle aspects of
life.
Further observation showed that these movements are
also inextricably linked with mental and emotional health.
Restriction of movement corresponds to a reduction of the natural
capacity to self-heal. Using the hands to feel these movements
allows craniosacral therapists to facilitate change in areas of
restriction. A limitation or absence of the movements implies a
reduction in the expression of health which may result in, for
example, numbness, a sense of something missing or disease.
Craniosacral therapy has
developed from clinical experience, which shows that health is
something active and not just an absence of disease. It is the
expression of life, responsible for the organization of the millions
of things that are constantly happening in the body. Craniosacral
therapy supports health in the body. It helps increase physical
vitality and well-being not only effecting structural change but
also having much wider implications, emotionally and spiritually.
The resulting increased sense of well-being can help with many
aspects of life, from strengthening the immune system to improving
interpersonal
relationships.
SCENAR:: Self-Controlled Energo Neuro Adaptive Regulation
The
technology for the SCENAR was developed by a team of Russian doctors
and scientists in the late seventies early eighties specially for
the Russian Space Programme and its cosmonauts . The team sought a
method of treatment that was energy - efficient, portable,
non-invasive and drug free. Good health maintenance without the use
of pharmaceutical drugs is imperative in the Space environment where
recycling of waste and water is essential.
Scenar devices were
first released for production in Russia in the early nineties.
SCENAR is a small remote
control size device which stimulates the body's own healing
mechanisms by activating the nerve receptors in the skin. Scenar
registers the body's own electrical signals and according to these
sends back electrical impulses via the peripheral nerves thus
activating the release of neuropeptides(body's own internal
pharmacy). Through biofeedback an interaction is formed between the
device and the patient's body. Thus no two consecutive signals are
the same preventing any adaptation to the neuro-electrical
stimulation and establishing a dynamic dialogue between brain, body
and the device.
The Scenar is primarily used for pain management.
It alters the relative stability of pathologic processes, and
stimulates the body to develop dynamic changes through
electrotherapy (electric impulses). It facilitates the body through
these changes and through the logical completion of the cycle of
disease, thus eventually destroying the disease.
Scenar influences the body, via, pseudo-nervous
impulses in the form of a spike-shaped impulse. This is a short,
high amplitude cycle followed by several lower amplitude cycles all
operating at the same frequency (which can be adjustable and
variable). The first cycle is strong enough to excite all types of
nerve fibers, without causing damage, due to its short duration.
The body controls the
work of Scenar via changes of skin impedance, thus establishing an
"interactive dialog," to correct body dysfunctions. The body
regulates the structure of each new impulse so that almost every
impulse will be different from the previous one.
Whilst principally promoted
for pain management, it is also highly effective in promoting
healing of damaged tissues such as overstretched muscles, sprains,
strains and tears. It also acts beneficially on the endocrine
system, promoting the balancing of hormones, particularly female
reproductive hormones. In this regard it is of use in painful
periods, dysmenorrhea and endometriosis. The ability to change
settings such as frequency allow it to be used for very specific
purposes such as balancing the autonomic nervous system. In a case
of overstimulation of the sympathetic nervous system (stress
conditions, raised blood pressure, chronic fatigue, low immune
system etc) this detailed protocol involves using specific
frequencies to sedate the sympathetic nervous system and stimulate
the parasympathetic nervous system.
At present, there is a data for well over 50000
successful treatments. Recent review, looking into the effectiveness
of SCENAR Therapy in over 17000 cases found that 95% of patients
have experienced improvement in their condition with 85% reporting a
complete pain relief.
Indications for use of SCENAR Therapy
. Symptomatic relief and management of chronic
intractable pain . Osteoarthritis . Backpain .
Sciatica
. Relaxing muscle spasms . Increasing local blood
circulation . Immediate post surgical stimulation of calf muscles
to prevent venous thrombosis
. Muscle re-education .
Maintaining and increasing range of motion . Preventing or
delaying disuse atrophy . Adjunctive treatment in the management
of post surgical and post traumatic pain
Energy Medicine
Energy Medicine is a term used to describe the
signalling of information. "In-formation" from one thing to another.
The term can be quite misleading and is actually information
medicine with particular reference to having health benefits either
psychologically, physiologically or spiritually.
It is suggested that this information is
communicated through the Zero Point
Field / The Akashic Field / The Quantum
Vacuum.
It is purported to work through ancient subtle
energy systems referenced to by many cultures, for example chinese
talk of Chi and meridians, the
Indian Vedics talk of Prana, Chakras and nadis.
Proponents state that according to quantum
physics - all things are entangled and intrinsically linked
through the quantum vacuum and that therefore information can be
transmitted from one place to another without the expenditure of
what classical physics calls energy.{Laszlo}
Emotional Freedom
Techniques
Based on the ancient
principles of acupuncture, EFT is a simple tapping
procedure that gently realigns the body's energy system, without the
discomfort of needles. Unlike other energy healing methods, EFT
incorporates an emotional element to the healing process, addressing
unresolved emotional issues as a likely cause of physical disease,
psychological dysfunction, and personal performance limits.
Negative emotional
experiences disrupt the energy meridians that run through our
body. The physical changes, from those disruptions, like
nausea or anxiety, become attached to the memory of that experience
and affect the way we see the world. EFT quickly realigns the
energy meridians with respect to negative memories, disconnects the
physical discomforts that are attached to it, and removes the
resulting symptoms.
EFT provides results..
Some cases are more complex, and may require more detailed attention
from an experienced EFT Practitioner. Extensive application of EFT
has shown impressive improvements in a wide variety of issues,
including those listed below.

Quantum Techniques
People have basically two options in health
care. They can choose a type of health care that covers up or
suppresses the symptoms, or they can choose an intervention that
seeks out the cause of the problem. With the latter method,
the reason for the failure of the immune system is addressed, so
that the body can heal itself as intended.
The question is how to assess the root of the
problem. Most tests merely identify and quantify the symptoms
of the real problem. By using bioenergetic testing, one can
identify the body's stress reactions to various domains.
All health issues follow
the energetic path like a row of dominoes follows the first
domino. Using non-toxic and non-invasive corrections of the
energy system for healing, the absolute bottom line root cause of
the problem can be corrected - the first "domino."
When working with the
body's energy system, one is simply removing barriers to the body
healing itself as it was designed to do with miraculous
efficiency. All health problems have a toxic or aberrant
frequency in the involved cells. A healthy liver cell has a
different frequency than a diseased liver cell in the same
person. If the unhealthy frequency can be changed to a healthy
frequency and maintained, the cell will heal and become a positive
force to all surrounding cells.
This is the goal of energy medicine.
The new science of Energetic Medicine is based on
chaos, wholeness, and fractal mathematics, all manifesting first in
the body's energy system. This holistic therapy operates with
the approach of balancing the body as a whole, chemically and
energetically.
